It’s not every day that your sister asks you to say a speech at her wedding. No pressure right? Being such a momentous and rare occasion to express your feelings in front of over 100 people obviously has to be perfect. From the time I knew I’d be showering her wedding with my sweet, sweet words, I started doing my research. Thankfully google gave me tons of advice, from how slowly to speak, how to stand and be composed, and finally to “just speaking from the heart”. Helpful? I think not!
Writing a speech for someone’s momentous occasion, especially as someone as special as a sister can particularly be extremely difficult. You have to find a comfortable balance between divulging into the past and tying it in with the new, i.e. the marriage. You don’t want to make it a complete sob story, but it also can’t be a joke or too serious. The words have to flow smoothly from one topic to the next. After all you only have one shot, right?
Here’s what I came up with. If you fancy it and have a wedding speech to come up, feel free to steal some of the ideas!
Sweet, sweet words
For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Natacia’s favourite sister, Taryn. And self-made maid-of-honour!
First off, on behalf of the newlywed couple I’d like to thank each and every one of you for coming and celebrating this beautiful new marriage, especially those who had to buy plane tickets and take off work to be here. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and we so appreciate you.
Natacia, from the moment I was born I was attached to you like I am attached to Krispy Kreme currently. Growing up, some might have thought I was obsessed with you because I’d always copy you, follow you and cry uncontrollably when you were out of my sight. To this day, we still share the same connection, minus the obsession and all I can say is that I am one lucky human to have you as my first ever best friend. No matter what life dealt us, you have always been someone I could count on, regardless of the situation and I wouldn’t change you for the world. Not only are you a splendid sister, but you are a caring daughter, a loving mother and I have no doubt in my mind that you will make for an impeccable wife.
Over the years I’ve observed the relationship that you and Micquel share. Everything from how you converse, play fight, console one another, share household tasks, take each other into account and treat each other in general. In doing so for the past five years, I have not once had a doubt in mind that the two of you weren’t meant to be together. To me, your relationship embodies the qualities every truly happy relationship should have, and because of this I know it will flourish.
Micquel, I can officially call you my brother-in-law, flippen finally! I might just forget your name at this rate. But on a more serious note, I’d like to formally welcome you to our family, brother-in-law. I’ve always wanted the best for Natacia and hoped that she would find someone that can keep up with her, someone who challenges her, makes her laugh, keeps her on her toes and shares the same values as her. Above all, I would always hope that she’d find someone who can put her in her place and you BIL, are that perfect someone.
Not only are you a true gentleman, but you look after Gabriel as if he was your own, have always been there for our family and you look good in a suit! To me you’ve always been a part of our family, without the formalities, but this just sets it in stone and I couldn’t be more proud to have you as my brother. To finish up, I would like to share a few tips with you, tips that are meant to guarantee a long and happy marriage.
- When you’re wrong admit it, when you’re right shut up.
- The best way to remember your anniversary is to forget it once.
- A Happy wife equates to a happy life.
And finally brother-in-law, never be afraid that Natacia will leave you, she has spent years training you and she will not give that up- trust me!
With that said, I’d like everyone to please raise a glass.
Natacia and Micquel, here’s a big congratulations on your marriage! We wish you a lifetime of happiness, success, tons of babies and an unwavering love for one another.
May the road be long and the party never end- congratulations!
